Hi Steve, I checked out your website again today, the first time in ages. I don't remember you having a recycle page before- maybe you did, but I didn't see it. Anyway recycling and reusing is one of my favourite things. I'm always on the look out for new ideas to reduce waste. Recently our local council has indulged us with our own recycling boxes - one for tins, one for glass, a bag for paper and card and a bag for plastic bottles. I also have a compost bin for home composting. Unfortuantely there is still plenty of junk that winds up in landfill. I do what I can to save money, support the community and reduce landfill. Here are some of the things I do Plastic bags- when I have too many I donate them to The Pendleside Hospice charity shop- this is one charity shop that doesn't waste money on buying bags for its customers. Clothes- my kids are growing, and they quickly grow out of their clothes. These are passed on to friends or family who have kids younger than mine, or I donate them to the Pendleside Hospice charity shop Margerine/icecream tubs- I keep hold of these to store my bone specimens in. They also come in handy for storing other bits and pieces such bitty toys, spare batteries etc. Furniture/electrical goods- I donate these to the Open-Door Furniture Recycling Scheme (Shed street, Colne). I do volunary work here. Furniture/electrical goods that come through here are passed on to people of low income who need them. Even damaged electrical goods (ovens, washers, vacuums etc) are taken- these are repaired where possible, and those that cannot be repaired are stripped down for for spare parts. It may seem foolish to buy compost when I make my own in a compost bin, bit it serves two purposes- I keep rats and gerbils. They live in glass tanks which I try to make as homely for them as possible by providing tunnels to hide in and a flooring material to scuffle around in. I buy a bag of compost (per tank) approximately once a month. Unlike sawdust shaving (which are usually chemically treated) compost doesn't appear to cause breathing problems in my rodents. It provides good digging for my gerbils and its great for them to tunnel in. Further more it doesn't need to be cleaned out as often as sawdust because it doesn't seem to stink as much. Once a month I replace the compost and the old is put in the compost bin with the added nutrients created by my herbivorous beasties- its all mixed in with the home made compost which improves its quality. Toilet roll and kitchen roll tubes are recyclable, but I like to get as much use out of these as possible, so rather than throw them straight into the recycle box, I throw them in the gerbil cage instead. My gerbils just love cardboard tubes- they spend ages gnawing them into tiny pieces then mixing them in with the compost flooring (which is later composted). - yes, my pets are also thrilled to be involved into recycling and reusing! Plastic Drainage pipes- My ferrets, gerbils and rats love tunnels and drain pipes are great for them. I'm always on the look out for cut-offs of piping that are clean but useless and would otherwise be turned into landfill. Unfortunately they never last more than a few weeks with my gerbils as they like to gnaw on them. I use energy saving light bulbs where ever it is possible (some of my rooms have stupid light fitting that won't take energy saving light bulbs). Rags- My dish clothes, dusters and tea towels eventually get holey and/or very stained. Rather than throw them out I put them in my rag box and use them to clean floor spillages, my mothers car, dog vomit etc. towels- My towels eventually get a bit tatty and have to be replaced. My old ones are kept as pet towels, they are used for drying wet dogs, lining the cat-carrier when a visit to the vets is due, and blankets for my 3 ferrets. Tooth brushes- I keep all my old tooth brushes for cleaning purposes- they come in handy when I'm using metal cleaning, they can get into groves of ornaments and jewellery. They also come in handy for cleaning dog turd from off my kids shoes. One of my favourite pass-times is skip dipping. I can't leave a skip alone if I think there is something in there I can salvage. I will salvage anything that I know I can get a home for be it with myself, friends & family or my local charity shop, or anywhere where I think it can be reused. Everything I save is either kept or given away - this is where Freecycle will come in useful. Books- I usually keep my books, but sometimes I find I have duplicates, or I need to make space for better ones. These days I register them with bookcrossing.com then either release them in the wild, or donate them to my local charity shop. I even recycle dead animals! see http://www.geocities.com/chunniemonster Unwanted toys/bric-a-brac are donated to the charity shop. These are just some of the things I do, there are probably of loads of other things, but I can't think of any more right now. I reuse what I can, what I can't use I pass on to others, or recycle what cannot be reused. Sharing and helping others can be free. All the best Chunnie P.S I'm guessing your user name on Bookcrossing.com is stevecunio? Its the only one I could find under Manchester that sounded like it might be you.
